Greco-Roman Egypt: A Fusion of Cultures
From the moment of the fall of the last Egyptian Pharaoh in 342 starts our discussions here in this blog till the fall of the last byzantine ruler in Alexandria in 644. this Millenia in the history of Egypt that we can call loosely (The Greco-Roman Period) when a fascinating blend of Greek and Egyptian culture emerged. Temples, tombs, and monuments reflected this fusion. At Dandara, Esna, Idfū, Kawm Umbū (Kôm Ombo), and Philae, we find temples that adhere to Egyptian architectural conventions but bear distinct Ptolemaic flourishes. Imagine colossal sistra-shaped pillars, elaborate floral Composite capitals, monumental screen walls, and crypts beneath the sands. But at the same time in the north of Egypt we find a lot of pure Greek monuments and a n amazing mix in theological ideas between the 2 cultures. romans and Byzantines later had a great influence on and clashes with Egyptian Coptic theological beliefs. a very rich era that also helped in shaping the Egypt that we have today. in this blog about Greco-Roman Egypt, we will try to show how the Greek gods and pharaohs meet under the Mediterranean sun
